EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICAL OPERATIONS
Communication plays a vital role in emergency response and emergency coordination. The Emergency Management District initiates, supports and maintains emergency communications throughout Forrest County and the City of Hattiesburg.
Communications in an emergency or a disaster can either enhance or hinder operations.
WIDE AREA PAGING SYSTEM
The District issues alpha numeric pagers to all public safety personnel within the county and cities. This system is used for alerting personnel /agencies with information such as severe weather, road closings, or major events. The Volunteer Fire departments in Forrest County are provided pagers that enable 911 dispatchers to page fire calls directly when a fire call is received. (In the past a telephone call-down list was used to notify firemen.)
800 MHz RADIO SYSTEMS
The District owns and manages an 800 MHz radio system. All agencies in Forrest County, City of Hattiesburg and the City of Petal, operate on this system. We are proud of this fact, because it gives us interoperability throughout the County. The District Communications Office maintains the system which includes radio programming, and upgrades for improvement of service.
The District has an Amateur Radio station KC5WFM that is staffed by licensed operators. These operators volunteer their time when the EOC is activated during a disaster or large scale emergency. The station includes, HF, 2-meter, 440 MHz, and packet radios.

The District Communications office is also responsible for the operation of the various computer and phone systems within the Organization.
In large scale emergencies or disasters the District has communication capabilities to communicate with local, state and federal agencies. A mobile command post with inter-jurisdictional communications is available in emergency situations.
